The Royal Beginning of the Diamond Engagement Ring đź’Žđź‘‘

When we think of engagement rings today, one thing almost always comes to mind: a diamond. It’s timeless, it’s classic… and it’s a tradition that actually began with royalty.

Back in 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring. At the time, this was a bold and luxurious move - diamonds weren’t the standard choice for engagements, and rings themselves weren’t always part of the proposal tradition.

But as royal influence tends to do, the idea caught on.

The diamond ring became a symbol not just of love, but of status, permanence, and intention. Over the centuries, this royal gesture evolved into what we now see as “the norm” - a sparkling diamond to mark one of life’s biggest moments.

At Jewellers Vault, we love this piece of history… but we also love putting a modern spin on it. Whether it’s a diamond, a coloured gemstone, or a redesign of heirloom pieces, your engagement ring should reflect your story - not just tradition.

Because while the royals may have started the trend… you get to make it your own.

The Royal Beginning

This client came to Jewellers Vault with four rings… and walked away with two.

Now, we know what you’re thinking - “That’s what you do! You redesign pieces so they can be worn again.”

But not this time.

These rings didn’t need a redesign. They were already absolutely stunning - two beautiful sets, each with their own story and sparkle. The problem wasn’t how they looked… it was how they felt.

Every time our client wore them, the rings would spin on her finger. Constantly adjusting them, straightening them, trying to keep them sitting just right - it quickly took the joy out of wearing them altogether.

So instead of changing the design, we made a simple but powerful adjustment.

We carefully joined each set together, allowing the rings to sit securely and comfortably on her finger, exactly as they were meant to be worn.

The result?

The same gorgeous rings she fell in love with - now wearable, practical, and confidence-boosting.

Sometimes, it’s not about starting over.

Sometimes, it’s about making what you already love work better for you.

Sometimes jewellery isn’t just jewellery - it’s a collection of memories.

Our client came to us feeling overwhelmed by the number of rings she owned. Each one held deep sentimental value, but wearing them all together wasn’t practical. The stones came from several treasured pieces passed down through her family - some from her mother, and others from her husband’s side, including stones belonging to his grandmother and even his great-great-grandparents.

Each stone carried a story, and letting any of them sit unworn in a jewellery box didn’t feel right.

One thing was very clear from our first conversation: she wanted to be able to wear **all of these meaningful stones together**. However, stacking rings simply wasn’t working. The rings rubbed together constantly and felt uncomfortable, turning something sentimental into something frustrating.

So we began our design process.

After our first appointment, we sketched several very different design concepts to explore how all of the stones could live harmoniously in one piece. But when our client saw this design, the decision was instant - she fell completely in love.

One of the perks of our design process is that we **draw every piece to size**. That means what you see on the design pad is exactly what you’ll get in real life - no guessing, no surprises.

When the finished piece was finally ready and she saw it for the first time, the reaction was everything we love about what we do.

She fell in love with it all over again.

Now, instead of several separate rings sitting in a jewellery box, these family stones are united in one beautiful piece - a design that honours generations of family while being comfortable enough to wear every single day.

And that’s exactly how sentimental jewellery should be worn.

Friday the 13th feels like the perfect time to talk about jewellery curses and superstitions… 👀
Throughout history people believed jewellery could bring luck, protection, love - or even misfortune.
From cursed diamonds to unlucky opals, some of these myths are wild.
The question is…
do you believe any of them?
